I found a really neat play-doh cookie recipe and with one small change to it (a banana instead of an egg) it was edible before it went into the oven. Just what we were looking for! Ingredients:
3/4 cup butter, softened
3 ounces cream cheese
1 cup white sugar
1 egg (I used half of a banana instead to make it edible as she was playing with it)
1 teaspoon vanilla extract
2 3/4 cups all-purpose flour
1 teaspoon baking powder
1/4 teaspoon salt
assorted colors of paste food coloring
Directions:
1. In a bowl cream butter, cream cheese and sugar until fluffy. Add egg and vanilla; beat until smooth.
2. In a medium bowl combine flour, baking powder and salt. Add dry ingredients to the creamed mixture. Stir till soft dough forms. Divide dough into fourths. Tint each with a different food color. Wrap in plastic wrap and chill for 2 hours.
3. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F (175 degrees C).
4. Let child play with dough and make their own cookies. Make sure you don't worry when they eat a bit as it is just cookie dough.
5. Bake cookies for 8 minutes or until lightly browned. Cool, let child eat creation and store in an airtight container

So So cute! We will be trying that one out. Applesauce instead of the egg would be good too...or I have even done it before, having left the egg out entirely...still cooks up fine!
Just want you to know...we have walked the trail and LOVE IT! Thank you so much!
I used to make play dough too. Do you know you can also make it with peanut butter? I used to make that kind too along with cooked and not cooked. I liked it better than the stuff you bought--was softer. Looks like you're having some fun there Hailey!!!
